There's a big difference between someone who surfs and someone who has spent decades competing, training, and studying surfing at the highest level. I'm not saying that to brag — I'm saying it because it matters when you're learning.

The details in surfing are everything. Small adjustments in your body position can mean the difference between wiping out and riding clean. Those small adjustments are nearly impossible to teach yourself, and hard to spot from the beach. That's where having a professional surf instructor — not just a local surfer with a beach permit — makes all the difference.

I've competed on the WSL Qualifying Series, trained under some of the best coaches in the world, and spent years studying what makes surfers improve quickly. When I'm teaching on the beach in West Maui, I bring all of that knowledge into every session — regardless of whether you're a total beginner or someone who's tried surfing before.

What Proper Surf Technique Actually Looks Like

Paddle efficiency. Most beginners exhaust themselves within minutes because they're paddling wrong. I teach you how to position your body on the board, how to cup your hands, how to use your core and shoulders, and how to time your paddle stroke to catch waves with far less effort. Good paddling technique alone will transform your experience in the water.

The pop-up. That jump from lying flat to standing looks simple. It's not. I break down the exact mechanics — hand placement, foot positioning, where your weight should be at each phase of the movement — so your pop-up is explosive, balanced, and repeatable. I'll watch your pop-up on the sand until it's right before we ever paddle out.

Wave timing. Knowing when to paddle, when to fully commit, and when to let a wave go is an art form. It's also one of the most learnable skills in surfing. I teach you how to read incoming sets so you stop second-guessing and start riding with confidence.

Balance mechanics. Surfing balance is different from any other sport. Your center of gravity, your gaze, how you use your arms — it all matters. I coach you on where to look (hint: not at your feet), how to shift your weight to steer, and how to stay relaxed so your body responds naturally to the movement of the board.

Surf etiquette. The lineup has an unspoken code. Knowing it makes you safer, more respected in the water, and a better experience for everyone around you. I always cover this — it's part of being a real surfer, and it's something you'll carry with you every time you paddle out anywhere in the world.

Why Technical Coaching Leads to Real Breakthroughs

I've watched students go from never having surfed to riding waves with genuine style — in a single session. It happens because the feedback is immediate, specific, and coming from someone who truly understands the mechanics at a competitive level. One small correction at the right moment can completely change the way someone surfs.

The common path for people who try to learn on their own is years of reinforcing bad habits that eventually become very hard to undo. Poor paddle position, a two-stage pop-up, stiff arms — these things feel normal after a while, and that's exactly the problem. Starting with proper technique means you build a foundation that actually holds up.

What to Expect in a Lesson at Maui Vibe Surf Club

Every lesson starts on the sand. We talk about ocean awareness, we work through the mechanics of the pop-up, and I answer any questions before we're in the water. Once we paddle out, I'm right there with you — positioning you for waves, giving real-time coaching, and making sure you're always in a safe and learnable part of the break.

I adjust my coaching in real time based on what I'm seeing. If your back foot is too far forward, I'll tell you exactly that. If your timing is off on the paddle, we'll work on it together. This is what separates a lesson with a professional from just renting a board and hoping for the best.

Whether you book a group lesson, a semi-private with a friend, or a fully private session, you'll leave with real technique — not just a fun experience. You can book your Maui surf lesson directly through our website and get started.

Ready to Learn the Right Way?

If you're visiting Maui and want to learn to surf — or improve your surfing — I'd love to be your instructor. Every student I've worked with has stood up on a wave by the end of their first session. That's not a guarantee — it's a result of proper teaching, the right equipment, and the right spot. Book a lesson at Maui Vibe Surf Club and let's get you on a wave. There's a big difference between someone who surfs and someone who has spent decades competing, training, and studying surfing at the highest level.
