Surfing Is Not One-Size-Fits-All: How I Personalize Every Lesson

One of the first things I do when I meet a new student on the beach in Maui is watch them walk. Seriously.
How someone moves tells me a lot — their natural balance, their dominant side, how they carry tension in their body. Before we even touch a surfboard, I've already started designing their lesson. That's the power of personalized surf instruction.
Every Surfer Starts Somewhere Different
I've taught surfers from all walks of life here on Maui. Former athletes who think surfing will be easy (it's different). Complete beginners who've never seen the ocean up close. People with physical limitations who were told they couldn't surf (they were wrong). Kids, seniors, families on vacation, and solo travelers who just want one meaningful experience during their trip to Maui.
Here's what I know for certain: no two students are the same. So no two lessons should be the same, either.
What I Customize in Every Maui Surf Lesson
Board selection. Not all beginner surfboards are equal. I choose the right size, volume, and shape based on your height, weight, and skill level. The right board makes learning to surf dramatically easier — and more fun.
Wave selection. Maui has a wide range of surf breaks — from gentle rolling whitewater perfect for first-timers to more advanced reef breaks. I pick the safest, most learnable spot for where you are right now.
Coaching style. Some students respond best to calm, step-by-step instruction. Others need energy and encouragement. I read that quickly and adapt.
Pace. There's no rush. We go at your speed. Some people are popping up and riding waves within 20 minutes. Others need more time on the sand. Both are completely fine.
Why This Matters for Your Maui Vacation
You might only have one afternoon to try surfing during your trip to Maui. I want that afternoon to be one of the highlights of your entire vacation — not a frustrating hour of falling off a board with no guidance. Personalized instruction means faster progress, more fun, and memories you'll actually want to talk about when you get home.
