A Local's Guide to Maui: 6 Experiences You Don't Want to Miss

Maui is so much more than beautiful beaches, fancy resorts, and sunsets (although we love those too!).
One of the best ways to experience Maui is to get out, explore different parts of the island, eat where locals eat, and discover the little places that make this island so special.
As a locally owned, family-run surf school in West Maui, we're lucky enough to call Maui home. And while we love introducing visitors to surfing, we also love sharing some of our favorite places around the island.
If you're planning a Maui vacation and want to explore beyond the resorts, here are six experiences we think are worth adding to your itinerary.
1. Visit the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Discovery Center at Whalers Village — For Free!
If you're staying in West Maui, make sure to visit the Hawaiʻi Wildlife Discovery Center, located inside Whalers Village in Kāʻanapali.
This educational center is a wonderful place to learn about Hawaiʻi's incredible wildlife, marine ecosystems, and the importance of protecting our oceans.
You'll find exhibits about humpback whales, sea turtles, and other fascinating creatures that call Hawaiian waters home.
It's especially fun for families with children, but adults will enjoy it just as much.
And the best part? Admission is free!
After exploring the center, you can walk along beautiful Kāʻanapali Beach, grab something to eat, or enjoy the shops at Whalers Village.
Local tip: This is a great activity for a rainy afternoon or when your family needs a little break from the beach.

2. Eat Like a Local at Ichiban Okazuya Hawaii in Wailuku
If you want to experience a little bit of everyday Maui life, skip the fancy resort restaurants for a meal and head to Ichiban Okazuya Hawaii in Wailuku.
One of the things we love about Maui is its local food culture, influenced by generations of Japanese, Hawaiian, Filipino, Portuguese, and other communities.
Ichiban Okazuya is a casual, no-frills spot known for its delicious Japanese-Hawaiian comfort food and local-style plate lunches.
Our family always stops at Ichiban to pick up food on our way to ʻĪao Valley. It's become one of our little family traditions!
We grab our favorite local food and head toward the beautiful green mountains for a day of exploring.
It's nothing fancy, just good local food, and that's exactly why we love it.
Local tip: If you're planning to visit ʻĪao Valley, stop at Ichiban first and grab some food to take with you. It's one of our favorite ways to enjoy a day exploring Central Maui!
And that's exactly where we recommend heading next. Just a short drive from Wailuku, ʻĪao Valley is one of Maui's most beautiful places to visit. It's the perfect way to turn a simple lunch stop into a memorable family adventure.
3. Discover the Beauty of ʻĪao Valley State Monument
After picking up some delicious local food at Ichiban, continue your adventure into the lush mountains of ʻĪao Valley State Monument.
As you make your way into the valley, the scenery changes dramatically. Towering green mountains surround you, tropical vegetation covers the hillsides, and you'll quickly understand why this is one of our family's favorite places to explore on Maui.
The valley is famous for its iconic ʻĪao Needle, beautiful walking paths, flowing streams, and breathtaking mountain views.
Beyond its natural beauty, ʻĪao Valley is also a place of great cultural and historical significance to Hawaiʻi.
Take your time walking the paths, enjoying the scenery, and appreciating the peaceful surroundings.
Important: Advance reservations are required for out-of-state visitors. Hawaiʻi residents with valid state identification are exempt from the visitor reservation requirement.

4. Watch the Surfers and See Sea Turtles at Hoʻokipa Beach
If you want to experience Maui's surf culture, Hoʻokipa Beach on the North Shore is one of the best places to visit.
This beach is world-famous for its powerful waves, talented surfers, and windsurfers.
Even if you don't surf, it's an amazing place to sit and watch people riding the waves.
But there's another reason we love recommending Hoʻokipa: the Hawaiian green sea turtles!
It's common to see turtles resting on the sand, and on some days, you might spot dozens of them gathered along the beach.
It's a pretty incredible sight, especially if you've never seen sea turtles in the wild before.
Local tip: The afternoon can be a great time to look for resting turtles. Remember to stay at least 10 feet away, never touch or disturb them, and respect any marked resting areas.
Hoʻokipa is known for strong currents and powerful surf, so we recommend enjoying the waves from shore unless you're an experienced surfer familiar with the conditions.
5. Take a Walk Through Makawao Forest Reserve
Most people picture beaches and palm trees when they think of Maui, but did you know the island also has beautiful forests?
If you're looking for something different, take a drive upcountry to Makawao Forest Reserve.
Here you'll find tall trees, cooler temperatures, peaceful trails, and a completely different atmosphere from the beaches below.
It's a wonderful place to enjoy a walk, spend time in nature, and escape the busy tourist areas.
There are several trails to explore, including options for shorter walks and longer hikes.
We especially love recommending this area to families who enjoy outdoor adventures.
Local tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes because the trails can get muddy after rain. Bring water and a light jacket, especially if you're visiting in the morning.
And while you're upcountry, stop by the charming town of Makawao to explore its small shops, galleries, and cafés.
