Why Surfing Is the Best Activity to Do in Hawaii — and Why Choose Maui Vibe Surf Club

If you’re planning a trip to Maui and wondering what you absolutely have to do while you’re here, we might be a little biased—but we think surfing should be at the top of your list.
You can drive the Road to Hana, watch the sunset, snorkel, and spend the day at the beach. But learning to surf gives you something different: the chance to actually experience Hawaii from the water.
And you don’t need any surfing experience to try it.
At Maui Vibe Surf Club, we teach first-time surfers, families, couples, kids, and travelers of all ages how to get comfortable in the ocean, understand the basics of surfing, and hopefully catch a few waves along the way.
Surfing Is Part of Hawaii
Surfing, or heʻe nalu in Hawaiian, has deep roots in Hawaiian history and culture. Long before surfing became popular around the world, Hawaiians were riding waves here.
That’s one of the things that makes taking a surf lesson in Hawaii so special. You’re not just trying another vacation activity—you’re experiencing something with a long connection to these islands and the ocean.
A good surf lesson should also teach you more than how to stand up on a board. We believe beginners should learn about ocean safety, surf etiquette, positioning, paddling, and how to respect the people and environment around them.
You Don’t Have to Be Athletic to Learn to Surf
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is:
“I don’t think I could surf.”
You might be surprised.
We’ve taught kids, parents, couples, complete beginners, and guests in their 60s and beyond. Some people arrive nervous about the ocean. Others have never touched a surfboard before.
That’s completely normal.
Our job is to meet you at your level and help you progress safely. Before entering the water, we spend time on land going through the fundamentals. Then we take those skills into the ocean with hands-on instruction.
The goal isn’t perfection.
The goal is to have fun, learn something new, feel comfortable in the water, and experience the feeling of catching a wave in Maui.
Why Take a Surf Lesson in West Maui?
West Maui is an incredible place to learn to surf.
Maui Vibe Surf Club operates in West Maui near Lahaina, primarily at Guardrails, with other permitted locations available when conditions require them.
Surf conditions change from day to day, which is why local knowledge matters. We consider the ocean conditions and the experience level of our surfers when determining the best approach for a lesson.
For visitors staying in Lahaina, Kaʻanapali, Napili, or Kapalua, taking a surf lesson in West Maui can also mean spending less of your vacation driving across the island and more of it actually enjoying the ocean.
Why Choose Maui Vibe Surf Club?
Maui Vibe Surf Club is a small, locally operated surf school built around personalized instruction.
Our lead instructor and owner, Philippe Chagas, spent years competing professionally, including competing on the World Surf League circuit. After decades in the ocean and years teaching surf lessons on Maui, he brings that experience into every lesson—but keeps the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming.
You don’t need to know anything about surfing before you arrive.
We’ll teach you.
Small Groups and Personal Attention
We intentionally keep our lessons small.
Depending on your group and experience level, you can choose from private, semi-private, and closed-group surf lessons.
Smaller groups allow our instructors to spend more time with each surfer, make corrections, answer questions, and keep a closer eye on everyone in the water.
For younger children, we recommend private 1:1 instruction for ages 12 and under so they can have an instructor dedicated to them throughout the lesson.
Everything You Need Is Included
You don’t need to travel to Maui with surf equipment.
Your lesson includes the equipment you need to get started, including:
Surfboard
Leash
Rash guard
Land instruction
Ocean safety and surf etiquette instruction
In-water coaching
Just bring your swimsuit, sunscreen, water, and excitement to try something new.
A Surf Lesson Is More Than Catching a Wave
Of course, catching your first wave is usually the part everyone remembers.
There’s something pretty special about seeing someone paddle into a wave, stand up for the first time, and realize:
“I’m surfing in Hawaii.”
But we also want you to leave understanding the ocean a little better than when you arrived.
Learning where to position yourself, how waves work, how to safely handle a surfboard, and how surfers share the ocean are skills that can stay with you long after your Maui vacation ends.
And sometimes one lesson is only the beginning.
We’ve had guests come back for another lesson during the same vacation because they caught the surfing bug after their first session.
Make Surfing Part of Your Maui Vacation
There are a lot of amazing things to do in Maui.
But if you’re looking for an experience that gets you outside, challenges you, connects you with the ocean, and gives you a Maui memory you’ll probably talk about long after you fly home, come surfing with us.
Whether you’re traveling solo, visiting on your honeymoon, bringing the whole family, or finally trying surfing after thinking about it for years, we’d love to get you in the water.
Come catch your first Maui wave with Maui Vibe Surf Club.
