First-Time Surfing in Maui at 60+: Three Beginners Catch Their First Waves

Surfing is something you can start at almost any stage of life.
This week at Maui Vibe Surf Club, we had three guests in their 60s out surfing in West Maui — and they did amazing.
One of them, Matt, had actually booked a private surf lesson with Philippe two days earlier. He loved the experience, did great in the water, and decided he wanted to surf again.
This time, he invited two of his friends to join him.
So a couple of days later, the three of them were back in the water together for a group surf lesson.
Three Beginners, One Great Session
All three were beginners, and the goal was simple: learn the basics, feel comfortable in the ocean, and have a great time.
At Maui Vibe, we always start on land with the fundamentals, including ocean safety, board positioning, paddling, standing up, and what to expect once you get in the water.
Then we take it one wave at a time.
Everyone learns differently, so we adjust the lesson to each surfer’s comfort level and experience.
This group brought a great attitude, listened well, and had fun from start to finish.
Can You Learn to Surf in Your 60s?
Absolutely.
You do not need to have started surfing when you were young, and you do not need prior experience.
You just need to be willing to try.
For first-time surfers, one of the most important things is to communicate your comfort level in the ocean. If you have never spent much time around waves, tell your instructor so the lesson can be adjusted to you.
That is exactly what beginner surf lessons are for.
These three surfers are a great example that age does not have to stop you from trying something new.
What They Said After the Lesson
After the session, Rahn left us this 5-star Google review:
“Our group of 3 had a great time in our lesson! We were well taken care of and the water was great! Make sure you tell them up front if you have had no experience with ocean waves! We wish we had had another day for more lessons! BTW, we are all in our 60’s and we rocked it!”

And we have to agree with that last part:
They rocked it.
Surfing Is About the Experience
A great surf lesson is not just about whether you stand up on every wave.
It is about getting in the ocean, trying something new, having fun, and walking away with an experience you will remember.
Sometimes it starts with one private lesson, like Matt’s.
Then the next thing you know, you are back in the water with your friends catching waves together.
That is what surfing is all about.
