Group, Semi-Private, or Private Surf Lessons in Maui: Which Is Right for You?

One of the first things I do when I meet a new student on the beach in Maui is watch them walk. Seriously.

How someone moves tells me a lot — their natural balance, their dominant side, how they carry tension in their body. Before we even touch a surfboard, I've already started designing their lesson. That's the power of personalized surf instruction, and it's why one of the most important decisions you'll make before your lesson is choosing the right format for your session.

At Maui Vibe Surf Club, I offer three lesson formats: group lessons, semi-private lessons, and private one-on-one sessions. I also run full-day Surf Camp for students who want the deepest possible immersion. Each format serves a different kind of student and a different kind of goal. Here's how to decide which one is right for you.

Group Surf Lessons: Best for Families and Friend Groups

Group lessons at Maui Vibe Surf Club are designed for 3 to 5 people, making them ideal for families, groups of friends, or anyone who wants to share the experience with people they care about. There's something genuinely special about catching your first wave alongside someone you love — the shared excitement, the cheering each other on, the stories you'll tell together afterward.

Group lessons are also a great value, and they're full of energy. Watching others learn alongside you is actually instructive — you pick up cues from seeing what works for someone else, and the group dynamic creates a fun, encouraging atmosphere that helps nervous first-timers relax.

My approach in group lessons is to deliver real technique to every person in the water, not a one-size-fits-all surface introduction. I move between students actively, giving individual feedback while keeping the energy high for the group.

Best for: Families, friend groups, groups of 3–5 visiting Maui together.

Semi-Private Surf Lessons: The Sweet Spot

Semi-private lessons are designed for two people — a couple, two friends, parent and child, or siblings. This format gives you significantly more personalized attention than a group session while letting you share the experience with someone important to you.

In a semi-private, I can focus much more closely on each student's individual mechanics. I see more, I can correct more, and I can adapt my coaching to each person's specific needs within the same session. The result is faster progress without sacrificing the shared experience.

This is probably the format I recommend most often when people are unsure what to book. The value is high, the personal attention is real, and the shared experience with your companion makes the whole thing more meaningful.

Best for: Couples, parent and child, two friends who want to learn together.

Private Surf Lessons: Maximum Progress, Pure Focus

A private lesson is exactly what it sounds like: you and me, one-on-one, for the full session. Every observation, every correction, every piece of coaching is directed entirely at you. There are no other students to tend to, no attention divided.

Private lessons are the fastest path to improvement, full stop. Students who book privates consistently progress further in a single session than in any other format — because the coaching density is simply higher. I can spot subtle problems in your pop-up, your paddle timing, or your weight distribution that I might not catch in a group setting, and I can fix them in real time.

Private lessons are also ideal for students with specific goals: someone who has surfed before and wants to break bad habits, someone working on a particular maneuver, or someone who simply wants the most immersive, premium surf experience Maui has to offer.

Best for: Solo travelers, returning surfers looking to improve, anyone who wants the deepest coaching experience.

Surf Camp: The Full Day

For students who want more than a single lesson, Maui Vibe Surf Camp is the full immersive option. You'll spend the day with me in the water — multiple sessions, extended coaching, real skill development, and the kind of progression that simply isn't possible in a 90-minute lesson.

Surf Camp includes photos of your rides, food and drinks, and pickup and drop-off throughout West Maui if your lodging is in the area. It's designed for people who are serious about learning to surf — or who just want an extraordinary full day on the water in one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Best for: Dedicated learners, surf enthusiasts visiting Maui for a few days, anyone who wants the full experience.

Still Not Sure? Here's My Honest Advice

If you're coming with family or a group of friends: book a group lesson. You'll have a blast, you'll all learn, and the shared experience is genuinely part of what makes it special.

If you're coming as a couple or with one other person: semi-private is the move. The extra attention makes a real difference and the experience is still wonderfully shared.

If you're coming solo or you're serious about improvement: go private. You'll make more progress and leave with more confidence than any other format can deliver.

Whatever you choose, I'll bring the same level of care, expertise, and commitment to your session. Book your Maui surf lesson at Maui Vibe Surf Club and let's get you on a wave.
