Private vs. Semi-Private vs. Group Surf Lessons: Which Is Right for You?

If you’re planning to take a surf lesson in Maui, you may be wondering which type of lesson is best for you. Should you book a private lesson, share an instructor with someone you’re traveling with, or bring your family or friends for a group lesson?

At Maui Vibe Surf Club, we offer private, semi-private, and closed group surf lessons, giving you the freedom to choose the experience that works best for you.

Here’s how they compare.

Private Surf Lessons

A private surf lesson gives you one-on-one instruction with your own surf instructor.

This is the best option for surfers who want maximum individual attention. Your instructor can focus completely on your comfort level, technique, and progress throughout the lesson.

Private lessons can be especially helpful for first-time surfers, younger surfers, people who aren't completely comfortable in the ocean, or anyone who simply prefers one-on-one coaching.

Best for:

  • First-time surfers wanting extra attention

  • Kids and younger surfers

  • Anyone wanting one-on-one instruction

  • Surfers who want to progress at their own pace

Private beginner lesson: $200 + tax

Semi-Private Surf Lessons

A semi-private surf lesson is for two people sharing one instructor.

This is a great option for couples, friends, siblings, or two family members who want to learn together while still receiving plenty of individual attention.

Because there are only two students with the instructor, you get a more personalized experience while still sharing the fun with someone you know.

Best for:

  • Couples

  • Friends

  • Siblings

  • Two family members

  • Anyone who wants a personalized experience without booking two private lessons

Semi-private lesson: $130 + tax per person

Closed Group Surf Lessons

Our group lessons are a little different from the open group lessons you may find elsewhere.

At Maui Vibe Surf Club, our group lessons are closed groups. That means we do not add strangers to your reservation.

You bring your own group of three or more people, and your surf experience stays with your group.

This makes group lessons a great option for families, groups of friends, wedding parties, reunions, or anyone traveling to Maui together. You get to learn, laugh, catch waves, and create memories with the people you came with.

Best for:

  • Families

  • Groups of friends

  • Wedding parties

  • Family reunions

  • Groups traveling to Maui together

Group lesson: $100 + tax per person for groups of 3 or more.

What’s Included?

We provide the equipment you need for your lesson, including your surfboard, leash, and rash guard.

Before entering the water, your instructor will go over important fundamentals such as ocean safety, surf etiquette, positioning on the board, paddling, and the proper technique for standing up.

Then it’s time to get in the water!

We select our lesson location based on the ocean conditions that day so we can provide the best possible experience for our students.

Which Surf Lesson Is Right for You?

Choose a private lesson if you want one-on-one instruction and the most personalized experience.

Choose a semi-private lesson if there are two of you and you want to learn together while still receiving plenty of individual attention.

Choose a closed group lesson if you're coming with three or more family members or friends and want to surf together without being paired with people you don't know.

Whichever option you choose, our goal at Maui Vibe Surf Club is to help you feel safe and confident in the ocean while experiencing one of the most memorable activities Maui has to offer.
