The Best Kept Secret About Surf Lessons in Maui

By Philippe Chagas | Maui Vibe Surf Club

Location, location, location!

I've surfed all over the world. Portugal, Brazil, Indonesia, California — I've paddled out in more oceans than I can count. But the surf in West Maui, something Is different here. The warmth of it. The color. The way the waves seemed almost welcoming. I understood immediately why people come here to take surf lessons.

And now, helping someone catch their first wave here is one of my favorite things to do.

If you're thinking about learning to surf in West Maui, let me point you toward the spots I trust most. The right beach changes everything — it's the difference between walking away inspired and walking away discouraged.

Launiupoko Beach Park — Where It Starts to Click

I love it here. The waves have a beautiful, rolling quality on smaller swells — smooth enough to really dial in your pop-up, but with enough energy to start feeling what an actual ride feels like. The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried. Surfers here aren't competing for waves, they're enjoying them. That kind of energy helps people progress faster than they expect. I've watched complete beginner surfers go from wobbly to genuinely riding waves in a single session here.

Ukumehame Beach Park — Room to Breathe, Room to Grow

This one doesn't get enough credit. Ukumehame's waves are mellow and spread out, which gives you something priceless as a beginner — space to actually think. You can focus on reading the water, timing your paddle, choosing your wave without feeling rushed or crowded. Real breakthroughs happen here. It's the kind of spot where confidence quietly sneaks up on you. I love giving surf lessons here.

Lahaina Breakwall — Worth Knowing About

Once you've had a lesson or two and want to keep practicing on your own, the Breakwall is a great spot to know. Small, gentle, consistent waves and an easy paddle-out make it one of the most forgiving places to surf in West Maui. A solid spot to put in extra time between sessions and watch your skills compound.

The One Piece of Gear I Always Mention

Before you paddle out anywhere in West Maui surf, grab a pair of reef shoes. The scenery is paradise, but the ocean floor has opinions. Reef shoes protect your feet getting in and out of the water — and they quietly remove a lot of the anxiety new surfers carry without even realizing it. Small investment, big peace of mind.

West Maui has everything a new surfer could ask for — warm water, welcoming waves, and some of the most beautiful coastline on the planet. But the spot that matters most is the one where someone who knows the ocean is right there beside you.

That's what we do at Maui Vibe Surf Club. Come find your wave. 🤙
